Few weeks ago I was working with a small internal project that involves importing CSV file to Sql Server database and thought I'd share the simple implementation that I did on the project. In this post I will demonstrate how to upload and import CSV file to SQL Server database. As some may have already know, importing CSV file to SQL Server is easy and simple but difficulties arise when the CSV file contains, many columns with different data types. Basically, the provider cannot differentiate data ...
I've been writing software for a while and recently had an opportunity to broaden my horizons and start developing for iOS. We decided to leverage, as much as possible, our existing skills and use MonoTouch and MonoDevelop by Novell. For those of you who do not know, Mono is a .NET port originally designed for Linux but adapted for other platforms as well. MonoTouch is a port specifically for building iOS applications using the .NET framework. MonoDroid is a port (in CTP-esque release) for Android. ...
I have been spending the last 2 weeks immersing myself in a number of Windows Azure and SQL Azure technologies. And in setting up a new business (I’ll speak more about that in the future), I have also become a customer of Microsoft’s BPOS (Business Productivity Online Services). In short, it has been a fortnight of Microsoft cloud computing. On the Azure side, I’ve looked, of course, at Web Roles and Worker Roles. But I’ve also looked at Azure Storage’s REST API (including coding to it directly), ...
Let me start this post by saying if you are searching for the capability to do this, there is a very good chance you have problems with your current database architecture. Having said that, I realize you may not have the option of normalizing your database, and have no choice but to work with what you've got. If this is the case, you may find the following post a useful workaround to whatever problem is causing you to search for a dynamic WHERE clause. A dynamic WHERE clause might be useful if you ...
[Russian version of the article] "In the beginning God made heaven and earth. Then he started to integrate." At the very start was the requirement: integrate two working systems. [fairy tale of the system integrators] Small digging up: It was one system. It was good but IT guys want to change it to the new one, much better, chipper, more flexible, and more progressive in technologies, more suitable for the future, for the faster world and hungry competitors. One thing. One small, little thing. We ...
Herve Roggero has just published a paper that outlines patterns for scaling using SQL Azure and the Blue Syntax (he and Scott Klein’s company) sharding api. You can find the paper at: http://www.bluesyntax.net/f... Herve and Scott have also just released an Apress book Pro SQL Azure. The idea of being able to split (shard) database operations automatically and control them from a web based management console is very appealing. These ideas have been talked about for a long time ...

Problem Like most organizations, we are planning to upgrade our database server from SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2008. I would like to know is there an easy way to know in advance what kind of issues one may encounter when upgrading to a newer version of SQL Server? One way of doing this is to use the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Upgrade Advisor to plan for upgrades from SQL Server 2000 or SQL Server 2005. In this tip we will take a look at how one can use the SQL Server 2008 Upgrade Advisor to identify ...
Visiting the MSDN SQL Server Integration Services Forum oftentimes I could see that people would pop up asking this question: “why I am not able to load an element from an XML file that contains zeros so the leading/trailing zeros would remain intact?”. I started to suspect that such a trivial and often-required operation perhaps is being misunderstood by the developer community. I would also like to add that the whole state of affairs surrounding the XML today is probably also going to be increasingly ...
/* EDIT - This problem has been fixed in the latest SQL Server 2008 R2 Cumulative Update package. It was identified that changing the aggregation design without reprocessing the aggregations prior to a ProcessUpdate on the dimensions causes this problem and it is a bug */ Many implementations require the use of ProcessUpdate to support Type 1 slowly changing dimensions. ProcessUpdate drops all of the affected indexes and aggregations in partitions affected by data that changes in the Dimension on ...

With the new release of the Windows Azure platform there are a lot of new features available. In my previous post I introduced a little bit about one of them, the remote desktop access to azure virtual machine. Now I would like to talk about another cool stuff – Windows Azure Connect. What’s Windows Azure Connect I would like to quote the definition of the Windows Azure Connect in MSDN With Windows Azure Connect, you can use a simple user interface to configure IP-sec protected connections between ...

We just bought a new Web Server, after installing Windows 2008 R2(which is a 64bit OS and IIS7), SQL Server Standard 2008 R2 and IBM Client Access for V5R3 with its Dot Net Data Providers, I tried deploying our new project which is fully functional on an IIS6 Based Web Server, I encountered this Error The 'IBMDA400.DataSource.1' provider is not registered on the local machine. Let's continue exploring some of the SQL Smells from Phil's list. He has been putting together. Datatype mis-matches in predicates that rely on implicit conversion.(Plamen Ratchev) This is a great example poking holes in the whole theory of "If it works it's not broken" Queries will this probably will generally work and give the correct response. In fact, without careful analysis, you probably may be completely oblivious that there is even a problem. This subtle little problem will needlessly complicate ...
Issue: After you have restored a sql server database from another server, lets say from production to a Q/A environment, you get the "Login Fails" message for your service account. Reason: User logon information is stored in the syslogins table in the master database. By changing servers, or by altering this information by rebuilding or restoring an old version of the master database, the information may be different from when the user database dump was created. If logons do not exist for the users, ...

At the DreamForce 2010 event in San Francisco Force.com unveiled their next big thing in the Fat SaaS portfolio "Database.com". I am still wondering how would they would've shelled out for that domain name. Now why would a already established SaaS player foray into a key building block like Database? Potentially allowing enterprises to build apps that do not utilize the Force.com stack! One key reason is being seen as the Fat SaaS player with evey trick in the SaaS space under his belt. You want ...
Actually, for snacks too, and it is nearly everywhere I turn. If I do Microsoft Exchange work, I know I will run into it. Active Directory, SQL Server, TFS, SharePoint, Azure and most recently Lync. All have provided a way to work with PowerShell and it has taken off (as it should). The question many will have is, How do I get started? A couple of ways are available. There are books, sites and blogs that will help you along the way. This will be the start of a series of posts that, my intention at ...
Problem The SAN data volume has a throughput capacity of 400MB/sec; however my query is still running slow and it is waiting on I/O (PAGEIOLATCH_SH). Windows Performance Monitor shows data volume speed of 4MB/sec. Where is the problem and how can I find the problem? Solution This is another summary of a great article published by R. Meyyappan at www.sqlworkshops.com. In my opinion, this is the first article that highlights and explains with working examples how PREFETCH determines the performance ...
Problem I am trying to understand how SQL Server communicates on the network, because I'm having to tell my networking team what ports to open up on the firewall for an edge web server to communicate back to the SQL Server on the inside. In honor of Phil Factor's recent post on SQL Smells, I thought I would post some blogs SQL smells and why some of them are bad as well as when they may be OK. Let's start with the top of the list that Phil has compiled. Use of deprecated syntax such as *= (Dave Howard) There are two problems here. First this is not in compliance with the SQL 92 standard. We should strive our code to be standards compliant whenever there is a standard available. Now this sounds like a cop out along the lines of "Because ...

Well now I’m busy with preparing my session about the Windows Azure AppFabric on TechED 2010 China, one of my colleagues Chen Pu told me that the new Azure Developer Portal was released last midnight. Then I just closed my session presentation and have a look on this new webiste. I had seen it before in the PDC10 videos and knew that it will be more quickly and user-friendly. Now let’s take a look on what it is. When you log on the development portal of Windows Azure, SQL azure or AppFabric, there ...
I’m on holiday the 2nd of December (Its our 21st anniversary which is mind bogglingly aweseome ) so I had been rather ignoring what was going on workwise on the 2nd. We have gotten the chance to see Microsoft’s recommendations on how to go about providing a reliable virtualization platform to support SQL Server in a Hyper-V environment. While that defines an “ideal” scenario, not all deployments for a virtualized platform happen on Hyper-V, there is a large number of deployments taking place on the VMware platform. And a recent post from Jonathan Kehayias on sqlblogs.com is a great summary of the resources available for making a great implementation possible. ...
With all the noise (not to mention the funk) around HTML 5 and Silverlight at PDC 2010, we could be forgiven for missing the numerous keynote announcements about Windows Azure and SQL Azure. And with all those announcements, we could be forgiven for missing the ostensibly more arcane stuff in the breakout sessions. But one of those sessions covered material that was very important. That session was Lev Novik’s “Building Scale-out Database Applications with SQL Azure,” and given the generic title, ...
Most of the time, I get question from new friends who work in other technologies that "SharePoint is for Content Management/WebSite Creation?". Well, it's common because SharePoint is sucessor of Microsoft Content Management Server (CMS) which dedicatedly used for Web Content Management. SharePoint Portal 2001 predominantly focus on Content Management feature, whereas the later releases came with more features. It's very easy to create Colloboration portal with SharePoint in Minutes where it requires ...
Phil Factor blogged about his quest for SQL Code Smells. He wants to start some discussions about coding standards and best / worst practices. This is sure to generate a lot of discussion. In fact it already has. Follow the #sqlcodesmells hashtag and you can follow the discussion. I have tweeted several sql code smells of my own. There are also some interesting comments on the blog. There is a debate brewing there about the futility of defining standards, art vs. science arguments, etc. One comment ...
Knowing fully we are now in SharePoint Foundation 2010 territory, I am going back in time. There are still questions around how to configure or create a Web Application and then a Site Collection using WSS 3.0. The questions have come up with companies moving to Team Foundation Server 2010 and not having had experience configuring WSS 3.0. And in many cases they have found in being the “go to” person for anything and everything that has to do with the TFS 2010 deployment you have done. Assumptions ...

Problem: For the last few months I have been running the SSIS Import/Export Wizard and it has been throwing up an "Unexpected Unrecoverable Error". The three buttons – Abort, Retry and Ignore – all cause the wizard to close. I am running SQL Management Studio 2008 R2 on my Windows 7 x86 computer. During hierarchy changes, MDS provides some basic rules for validating hierarchy members against some logic that is defined in the model within the MDS interface or through the Services interface. Behind the scenes, MDS is generating all sorts of T-SQL to ultimately enforce these rules. There is the ability to extend these rules with your own custom implementation if the configuration driven rules don’t suffice – either a SharePoint workflow or through custom CLR code packaged as an assembly. For ...
Readers of my blog and/or column know that I am a big fan of PowerPivot. And because of that, I was excited to see, both at June’s Microsoft BI Conference (part of Tech Ed) and this week’s PASS Summit, that the PowerPivot technology will become more entrenched. What Microsoft showed in June was that the full-fledged SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) product would support the in-memory BI (IMBI) engine, known within Microsoft as VertiPaq. This cool columnar, in-memory technology will not be limited ...
