For a very (too) long time, the installation procedure for MVVM Light sucked. It involved downloading and unzipping files in various locations. Unfortunately, creating an automated installer is not completely trivial because of the variety of files that are getting installed: Binaries, Code Snippets, Project and Item Templates, all require different locations, and all that for VS2008, VS2010, Blend 4 and Silverlight 3, Silverlight 4, WPF3.5 SP1, WPF4, WP7.0 and now WP7.1 “Mango”. Read the rest of ...
One thing I’ve always enjoyed in Silverlight/WPF are the easing functions ( http://msdn.microsoft.com/e... ). The easing functions are commonly used to provide interesting looking animations via key frame-based interpolation. XNA has a few, limited bits of interpolation built in (primarily Lerp (i.e. linear interpolation) and SmoothStep (i.e. cubic interpolation)). For a sprite animation project that I’ve since set aside (it’s not dead, but it’s been back-burnered for a while ...

If you plan to use Silverlight for Windows Embedded on an i.MX53 from Freescale, give a look at: http://www.adeneo-embedded.... Adeneo Embedded developed an OpenGL rendering plugin that will offload most of the rendering to the dedicate hardware and will provide a more responsive UI leaving plenty of CPU cycles for your own code. This will lead to a better user experience for the end-users of your devices ...

Introduction One of the things that I recently had someone show me was using the “Copy Xaml” feature in Expression Design to create HTML5 SVG Path Data. I later found out that this was demoed at MIX11 in a session called HTML5 for Silverlight Developers. So with that said, I don’t take credit for discovering this, just documenting it for others to use. If you want to see the final product then click here. Go ahead and right click on the page and you will see it’s just path data (no image – just straight ...

Its been quite some time since I last post on the subject of the AsyncOperationService (in fact quite some since I posted period). In real world use I found some common patterns emerge that has lead me to make a few small adjustments to eliminate some common duplication I was seeing in code consuming the service. Here is the new code file for my ever so slightly improved AsyncOperationService in its entirety. AsyncOperationService using System; using System.Windows; using System.Collections.Generic; ...

Introduction I’m proud to announce my first eBook and update to my article series on OData for Silverlight and Windows Phone 7 is complete. We have two services, that can be called independently, but also can be used together. They have some common types, and if they called together, default Visual Studio proxy generation will create the same types in different namespaces. There are multiple articles, that recommend to use command line SvcUtil instead of Visual Studio IDE. The article How to reuse types across service endpoints suggests on client side manually update Reference.svcmap to include multiple <MetadataSources> and NamespaceMappings ...
Microsoft Expression Blend is a design tool that allows you to create fantastic user interfaces for such Windows based applications and Web applications. You can use Expression Blend with .NET Framework 3.0, 3.5, and 4.0 applications. What Blend can do for you One of the prime advantages of Expression Blend is its ability to separate code from design. Using Blend, designers can work independently on one set of deliverables for a project while developers can work on another. But this doesn’t mean ...
While this blog is primarily about Silverlight, ocassionally this blog will also contain posts about other .NET technologies. Including Windows Forms. Did you just gasp? Wait. There are still many developers in various corners of the world working with Windows Forms even today. I was trying to update a service reference in a Silverlight project and I got : Error HRESULT E_FAIL has been returned from a call to a COM component. Problem was that ServiceReferences.ClientConfig file being actually a common file shared between 3 projects, I extracted it outside and referenced it from a common project as a link to the file. When the reference (creation or update) wizard is trying to update this file, this "very descriptive and intuitive" error shows up. So, when getting this error ...

I recently acquired a Samsung Omni 7 with the Windows Phone 7 OS installed. With this device I have a new found desire to learn Windows Phone 7 programming and embarked on the endeavour by reading “Programming Windows Phone 7” by Charles Petzold (ISBN 978-0-7356-4335-2). I really enjoyed going through the book. While the one I was reading had a few spelling mistakes in it (not that I am one to point any fingers) I am sure they had been rectified before it went to print (I was reading the free ebook). ...

Introduction One of the features that I’m surprised to see hardly no one talk about is “Communication Between Local Silverlight-Based Applications”. This is not new to Silverlight as it has been around since Silverlight 3. In other words, this will allow you to have two Silverlight applications running on the same PC talk to one another without using Web Services, etc. I originally was looking into this for a pet project that I was going to use with Kinect, but found this very valuable and decided ...
Giovanni Bassi published the original NuGet package for LINQ to Twitter (L2T), which I'm appreciative of. Since then, I have yet to do a release myself, but that is changing now. The current version of LINQ to Twitter is stable enough for a release, so the time is right. I think there are a few aspects of a LINQ to Twitter NuGet package that aren't as simple as point at a project and your done, so I'll document my process here in case anyone else is interested. Getting Started I had played around ...

Hace unos días recibi un email de Microsoft con noticias sobre Visual Studio, y algo que me encanto fue ver que por fin tenemos soporte para HTML y CSS 3 en el editor de VS. I found out last night that I have been awarded with the Microsoft MVP Award for my contribution to the Silverlight community. I was included in a very happy group of developers that yesterday was awarded (or re-awarded -- is that a word?) Microsoft MVP in their area of expertise. In my case, it was a re-award.
