Eric Gunnerson isn’t impressed with the film version of Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. I think there’s an important lesson to be learned here. It’s okay to take a little creative license when adapting a book to a screenplay. Peter Jackson’s version of Lord of the Rings is an excellent example. He shifted around quite a bit of detail and made some fairly significant changes to Tolkien’s work. But his movie was still loved (in general) by the Tolkien fans. Why? ......
I just received the following e-mail from my cable company: Please Do Not Respond to This Email -- If You Have Any Questions, Please Contact Your Local Insight Office. Dear Insight Broadband Customer, We are contacting you in regards to your Insight Broadband service. Our Network Operations Center (NOC) runs a test over our entire network on a regular basis to find computers setup to run as servers. Your computer has come back with ports open, indicating that it is running as a dedicated Internet ......
I just asked Brad Abrams of Microsoft, this question. But I’m interested in the opinion of others, as well. Why, in the 21st century, with broadband access to the internet, if not ubiquitous, at least prevalent, couldn’t anyone in a non-manual labor job, work from home? And have their home wherever in the world they might want it to be? What are your thoughts ......
Yesterday, the Indiana Legislature finally passed a bill which will require Indiana to observe DST. Currently, most of Indiana is on Eastern Standard Time all year round. I’ve lived in Indiana since 1985, and this issue has come up during nearly every legislative session, only to die somewhere along the way. It still has to be signed by Governor Mitch Daniels, but since he campaigned on this issue and put it near the top of his legislative agenda, we would all be stunned if he doesn’t ......
I admit it, I love tabs. I think they’re a natural extension to the MDI interface. Of course, most of the time they’re not used as an extension of MDI, but rather as a totally different way to do MDI. But that’s beside the point. The point is that Notepad doesn’t cut it for me. Here’s what I require from a text editor: · Multiple Document support (tabs!) · Small (I don’t need a development IDE – I already have one of those) · Simple and consistent ......
First, let me say that I never wanted this to a political blog. There are too many out there already, and they all do a better job than I could ever do. If you’re a fan of dKos, or InstaPundit, or both or any others, that’s fine. I would only recommend that you also read other sources, because getting all your news from any one source is always dangerous in the long run. Second, let me say that both Cyrus (happy b-day later this week) and Scoble have done admirable jobs at “getting ......
Joe has posted an update to the Design Guidelines describing issues related to IDisposable, Finalization, and resource management. I can’t overstate the importance of getting this right and there are some very good guidelines here ......
Visual Studio 2005 Beta 2 is going to ship on April 25 according to this page on the Europe, Middle East, and Africa MSDN site. This is welcome news, to say the least. This build is “redristributable” meaning you’re allowed to make applications based on this version of the .NET framework and distribute them to users. You were not permitted to do that under the EULA for Beta 1 and the CTP’s.Next stop, RTM. :-) ......
A public beta of CodeSmith 3.0 is now available. Summary of new features listed below. - Completely re-written parser/compiler which is faster and correctly reports line numbers from the template instead of from the compiled template source. This results in a much nicer debugging experience. - XML support - There is now an XmlProperty directive that makes working with XML MUCH easier. This directive will give you a strongly typed object model to work with if you provide an XSD schema or it will give ......
Peter Golde has announced the Feature complete drop of PowerCollections 1.0. I’ve been following the progress of this project with half an eye for some time now. I think that this is definitely a package I can get some mileage from ......
If you haven’t been reading Chris Laseter’s series on refactoring to patterns at CodeProject , you’ve been missing out. This article on Type-Object methodology is his latest ......
Josh Ledgard (and apparently everyone else BUT me), is excited about the new MSDN Forums Beta. Unless they’re planning on adding an RSS feed (and I don’t see any indication of that), count me out. Why? Simple. I do everything in Outlook. I use NewsGator for my RSS Aggregator. It also can be an NNTP newsreader, but I don’t like how it formats my messages, and it’s awkward to post to NNTP newsgroups with it. Also, since I use it to post to my blog, and it can only handle one ......
