I finally plopped down the money for a new cell phone, and I got a PDA phone this time.

It’s called the “Sprint” PPC-6700, and it’s wonderful.  I put “Sprint” in quotes, because it’s actually made by a division of AudioVox (now spun off into UTStarcom).  You can read some of the details here.  The slide out keyboard is great, and I’m getting surprisingly good at typing with my thumbs.  :)

I like it because replaces my bulky old Axim with something small and sleek, and replaces my crappy Samsung A500 phone with one that actually has a working speakerphone and can connect to my computer properly.  The EV-DO capabilities are very nice.  I’ve tested it with DSLReports to 465Kbps.  Not too bad for wireless.  :)

My only complaints:

  • No voice dialing
  • No “real” key lock
  • Even though the phone has GPS capabilities for E911, I have to buy another Bluetooth GPS Receiver to actually use mapping software with it.

Oh, and the price is pretty hefty too, but you can usually work with your provider to get it cheaper.  Remember, they make money off you every month.  If they have to lose a little on the phone to keep you happy as a customer, it’s worth it to them.  Mine ended up costing me about $150.

Verizon has it also, but with reduced Wi-Fi capabilities.  I’m not sure why Verizon chose to do that.  You’ll have to ask them.

Actually Sprint just fixed your first two complaints in a free ROM upgrade that was released last week - check out this thread for more info

In addition to the voice dialing and key lock the ROM speeds up the device a bit (especially switching back and forth between portrait and landscape mode) and a bunch of other cool tidbits.

Check out the forums at for all kind of cool goodies for your phone and welcome to the club ;)
