Craig Utley Somniferous Bloviations

I have been a user of AVG Anti-Virus for quite a while and AVG recently released version 8.0 First, I think version 8 rocks; it has anti-spyware, anti-rootkit, and a Web Shield product. However, it is the Web Shield product that is causing a problem for some people with Windows Live Messenger. After installing AVG 8.0, attempts to log into Messenger are met with error code 8100030d, which says the service is temporarily unavailable.

The answer is to disable the "Instant Messaging protection" option in AVG. Messenger will then work properly, although the AVG system tray icon will complain that AVG is not fully operational.

Fortunately, AVG is aware of this issue. I emailed their support and got the following reply: "Please note that we are aware of this issue and our developers has already prepared fix. [sic] It will be available in the next program update."

I don't appear to have anything called Webshield. Is that just with the bought version? If not, where can I find it - I've looked all over. I can only find Resident Shield and I'm still having this problem even when I disable that.

Cheers.

I'm having the exact same problem as Tiggy up there. I can't find any sign of a Web Shield component.

My guess is you guys are running into a new issue. According to the AVG support site:

"1460:MSN connection issue while the AVG IM protection is active
Please let us inform you that this situation is caused by change in the MSN authentication on Microsoft Servers. This change prevents you from login to MSN servers if AVG Online protection is active.

The issue is going to be fixed in the next AVG program update, which should be released today (2008/07/24).

Thank you for your understanding."

I trusted AVG completely until this version.. now I can't trust it at all. I switched over to NOD32 from ESET and am GLAD I did. A friend complained of some problems, so I took his hard drive and hooked it up externally to my pc. Ran a scan with NOD32 and it found 27 viruses that AVG had NO CLUE was there.

if you're using AVG free antivirus software, click TOOLS, ADVANCED SETTINGS, and on the left click UPDATE, click PROXY, and then for the dropdown menu select USE PROXY, and down below select AUTOMATIC.

Don't know why the update settings are causing error 80072f06 when trying to connect to windows live messenger. pisses me off though but now it's working. and I figured it out on my lonesome! :D
