Vista install taking FOREVER

Friday, December 29, 2006 2:31 PM

I started my Vista install late this morning. It's now almost 4, and its STILL installing! At least this time the installer was nice enough to inform me that it would take several hours, but I'm still surprised at how long this has been.

Btw, one bit of info that we've encountered installing this around the office: if you install Vista, and after putting in your license key it tells you that the installer had an error occur and must be restarted, and all subsequent attempts to install do the same thing, here's what you do: DON'T put in the license key.

I kid you not.

Just click continue, tell it that you dont' want to enter a key at this point, and it'll continue installing. Once installed, it will ask you again for it, and this time you can provide it without any error happening. But seriously...that's one of the silliest things I've ever heard of: an install key causing an error.

I've installed Vista 2-3 times now on my home desktop...only takes around 25mins or so for me...

However, it's been giving me nothing but problems. Be very careful what you choose to install on Vista or you can seriously screw the whole thing up (hence my 2-3 installs).

Stay far far away from the devil-software known as Nero. Vista and Nero do NOT get along well. 12/30/2006 12:48 AM | Dylan

I think it might have taken longer because I was upgrading from XP, not doing a clean install..but it finally finished and so far so good.

I'm taking a different approach with my new OS, because I'm a little gun-shy about using anything of importance on such a new and untested OS: I'm virtualizing all my dev environments so that I don't have to worry about my main box getting toasted and having to spend all that time reinstalling crap.

I'll stay away from Nero, thanks for the heads up.

Thanks for the advice on the serial key, works a treat. We were having a hell of a time in the office trying to make the test PC install and just tried it without the code and off it went!

I knew about Nero from using RC2 lol. It gets VERY upset when you do anything with Nero. Also, any NVidia GFX card older than a year or so may very well not be supported by the new drivers. Windows will use it, but you get zip from the OpenGL and Direct3D so it's pretty pointless.

I have also discovered that if your PC doesn't have a fair bit of power behind it and at least 1gb of RAM it'll run like a DOG with Vista. I would seriously recommend people don't upgrade to it unless you've checked every bit of software and hardware you own is gonna work properly.
