Workout Regiment Post Offends - My Response

Tuesday, May 22, 2007 4:51 AM

So I posted my workout regiment this morning on my blog. I'm normally pretty good with trying to keep it off the main feed and having it show up on my personal one, but this morning I was in a rush and just fired up Live Writer and posted.

I get a comment from "IrritatedByYourPosts" about it saying

"Do you not have anything more interesting to post?
Like some latest design pattern youre using? Or some other geeky but informative post.
I just find it irritating, all these posts talking about Vista and Sql, and C#, and then right in the middle, how much your pumping down the gym!
Woopeee!"

My first reaction is to lol as I imagine the antagonist from the South Park WoW episode sitting at his desk, tape keeping his 1988-era plastic glasses frame together, and thinking how kewl he was putting it to the "jock" on the forum about how irritating he found my post...and then stopping to catch his breath from exurting so much energy chuckling to himself.

Of course, I'm greatly distressed by this. I don't know who IrritatedByYourPosts is (because he didn't actually put his real name on the comment, unless his parents really hated him and actually called him IrritatedByYourPosts), but I'm concerned for him/her. Obviously there are other things that must be irritating this person to have them lash out so angrily at someone's workout regiment. Maybe their man-love for Krispy Kreme donuts...maybe their jealous that as interesting as SQL Reporting Services is, it just doesn't turn the ladies' heads like a set of rock hard pythons...or maybe this is all a plot byJustice Grayy because he knows that even if he meets his body-fat goal, I'll STILL look ultimo-hot compared to his farmer-tan encrusted pasty white pool boy physique.

Regardless for those of you that were offended by my workout post, I just need to say:

"Whatcha gonna do bruther when the 24-inch pythons run wild on you?! Ooooooo yeeeah, DIG IT!"

Dude, that was not me. I am glad you are posting about your workout goals.

Quite frankly, if "IrritatedByYourPosts" can't be bothered to use his real name I doubt he is worth changing your style for. I frankly appreciate the fact you are posting about this since it means you have a more balanced life than just some random geek who does nothing but sit at his comp all day.

**** IrritatedByYourPosts! He is obviously just jealous, and if he is still reading I challenge him to a fight because HE IS A LOSER. 5/22/2007 4:58 AM | Justice~!

I don't think "Irritated" sounds that angry, although I agree that he should probably not hide behind a veil of anonymity and own up to his opinions if he wants to share them with you.

Don't be too distressed, D. At least you don't have anonymous posters threatening you (Kathy Sierra style) like I had on my blog. That was not fun in the least. 5/22/2007 5:01 AM | Mrs Loquacious

I remember a certain "El Stevo" who also was anonymous and threw out some nice GWB hate around the game contest time.

Anonymous people are fun. I personally like your workout posts and I'm pretty tired of geek posts. Geeks should have personality and a life and your workout posts show you have both.

You're an inspiration and I think they belong in the main feed and that you're being two nice and denying that inspiration to all the main feed readers by hiding it on your own blog. 5/22/2007 5:34 AM | George

D,

I appologise, it was childish for me to hide behind a fake name like that.
My name is Mark, I am in fact a .Net Developer, in London, UK.

My intent wasnt to lash out on your fitness regime. Good for you in your efforts. I wish you nothing but good health.

My frustration was merely to point out, that I, like many others from around the world, come here to read and listen to your technical expertise, along with everyone elses on Geekswithblogs.net I'm a a fan! You have my attention! A captive audience sitting here listening. So make the most of it and inspire me with your knowledge. Its what makes this website so good.

Thankyou for confirming that like you have said, it wasnt meant for the main feed. But isnt this exactly for "comments" are for? To get feedback and opinions from your captive audience? It wasnt a personal attack. Just a small criticism.

Regards

# re: Workout Regiment Post Offends - My Response

All right, seriously now a couple of things!

Who comes *here* for technical knowledge? I come here because I want to know more about Venom and Spider-Man 3!

I think more geeks *should* be interested in fitness, as well as bathing regularly but that is a separate topic! But you are right, it's not for everyone's tastes.

Don't cave, Mark! Trust me, I know D'Arcy pretty well and he is
A
WUSS
SUPREME

If you had retorted with another scathing comment, I bet D'Arcy would have teared up at the office and posted another apology post. That would have been awesome! But don't be fooled by D'Arcy's "celebrity" cred. Make sure you show him you're not to be messed around with!

D'Arcy:
Your response should have been:
"You don't get to 590 posts by just talking about Vista and C#!!"

...I like your Justice body fat slam though... 5/22/2007 6:10 AM | Scott Miller

# re: Workout Regiment Post Offends - My Response

You're not going to like that BF slam after I get through cutting up into 4250 lbs of ripped muscle, Scott! Then all the women in your life will be all, "Ooh, that Justice is so dreamy. Life would be so much better if Justice was *my* man", and you'll have to say, "C'mon, Mom, you're married - this is making me uncomfortable"...

Remember, I'm not just doing this for me. I'm doing it for...YOUR MOMMA!!

Heh...Mark I thought your comment was great as it's not sparked not only a humerous response by me, but also set up a Scott Miller vs. Justice Gray at the next tech-event both attend at! All is going according to plan....

But seriously, sorry that you didn't like reading about my workout regiment...and I do appreciate the feedback...although I probably won't really change what or how I post (agree to disagree thing)
:)

Mark From London - I am using one of my 4 official tags to tag you with the "6 month developer challenge"!

D'Arcy tagged me a few weeks back and while I still have yet to post my official goals of the challenge, I would like to tag you with one of my 4 tags and ask you to join me in the challenge.

I like your wording above where you say you come here to read and listen to the expertise, and that there is a captive audience here. Accept the challenge and help spread the good word :) 5/22/2007 11:05 AM | Shaneo

Maybe a post like this would have worked a little better for you:

Public Const MaxLossPerDay As Int32 = 2
Private Sub Form1_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
Randomize()
Dim Darcy As Int32 = 250
Dim DaysToGoal As Int32 = 0
Dim CurrentQuality As Int32 = 0
Dim bNeedRest As Boolean = False
While Darcy > 200
If Not bNeedRest Then
CurrentQuality = WorkOutQuality()
Darcy = Darcy - CurrentQuality * MaxLossPerDay
Me.ListBox1.Items.Insert(0, "Day: " & DaysToGoal & " Weight: " & Darcy)
If CurrentQuality * MaxLossPerDay > 1 Then
bNeedRest = True
End If
Else
Me.ListBox1.Items.Insert(0, "Day: " & DaysToGoal & " rested.")
bNeedRest = False
End If
DaysToGoal += 1
End While
Me.ListBox1.Items.Insert(0, "It took " & DaysToGoal.ToString & " days to reach your goal and you weigh " & Darcy & " pounds.")
End Sub
Private Function WorkOutQuality() As Int32
Return CType(Rnd(), Int32)
End Function 5/22/2007 12:28 PM | Hal L

I don't mind you blogging about it, but the word is "regimen", not "regiment" (unless you're working out with a battalion of soldiers). 5/25/2007 2:34 PM | Brian Schroer
