My Buffer is Overrun...

Thursday, February 21, 2008 11:51 PM

Do you ever feel like there's just too much stuff to learn and not enough time in the day to learn it? I mean seriously...I've got the following things on my plate at the moment:

VB.NET 2008 (as in exploring the new language features more in depth)
MVC
More AJAX Stuff
LINQ (to Objects, to SQL)
Entity Framework
WCF
WPF
Biz Talk
Mobile Development using Mobile 6 and VS.NET 2008
NHibernate
Subversion and Git
Castle Windsor

[Edit]
NDepend
NUnit

[/Edit]
...

A co-worker made an interesting comment today that I think rings true: When do we get to stop learning *new* things and just get good with what we've got?

I think that what will emerge from this continual outpouring of products and offerings is the emergence of the "Evangelist" as a forefront role within communities and companies. To expect that all employees will be able to grasp all of these is unreasonable...but having one person who's sole purpose is to evaluate, educate, and facilitate adoption will become even more of a requirement.

Sigh...I think I'll need a new bookshelf shortly...already running out of room as it is...

I definitely agree with this. There is always new things to learn, but sometimes you just got to improve your existing skills.

I think a lot of people in our class that you taught would say there buffer is overrun as well... 2/22/2008 9:01 AM | Brenley Dueck

You lazy panda... I do not see Kung Fu on your list of things to master. 2/22/2008 12:44 PM | Blogus Maximus

Every...single...day.

I'm in the same situation, wanting to learn so many things it's hard to learn anything. Not even computer-related, but things like photography and sketching. 2/22/2008 5:31 PM | Grant Palin

Hey Grant, I know exactly what you mean. I am somewhat artisitc...and in my highschool days I had a "want" to be a comic book illustrator.

I still try to dabble in artistic "stuff" but its so hard just keeping up with the latest dev news... the other stuff just takes a back seat! 2/22/2008 7:54 PM | Shaneo

It's like being pulled in different directions at the same time...there are so many things I want to do and read and learn these days, the list is very daunting! 2/24/2008 12:26 AM | Grant Palin

As Dalton said in the classic movie Roadhouse, "It's going to get worse before it gets better."

I'm at the point now where I learn just enough about a technology to decide if it's something I really need to know in the next six months. If it doesn't make the cut then I force myself to ignore it. A few things on that list right now are WPF, Silverlight 1.0, and LINQ to SQL.

I still have more to learn than time to learn it but this strategy has helped. 2/25/2008 12:12 AM | Rob Windsor
