WP7 – Do’s and Don’ts for Charging the Samsung Focus

Tuesday, November 30, 2010 7:34 AM

Discovered this over the last few days, and its worth noting. I was trying to charge my phone at work via the USB cable connected to my laptop, and the battery was charging at a snail’s pace. After a few hours, I never did get past the half-way battery mark (and it was pretty close to that before I started charging).

Came home, used the wall plug and voila – phone charged up in no time.

So just an FYI – USB charging is brutally slow. Maybe this isn’t news to anyone else…come to think of it, my BlackBerry was always charged using the wall plug…but I just assumed that the USB cable would do just as good a job.

If you’re travelling or heading to work and thinking you’ll rely just on the USB cable, don’t – bring the wall charger adapter with you.

OMFG, I just noticed this and couldn't believe it. I figured something was drastically wrong with my unit. Sad. 11/30/2010 2:41 PM | JS

out of curiosity... were you using a properly powered USB port? As you know, some USB ports produce power capable of charging a device while others do not.

This is especially true of laptops. My Dell, for example, has 4 USB ports, 2 on the back and 2 on the side... of the 2 on the side, only one provides enough output voltage to power or charge a device, as opposed to merely providing connectivity.

I charge my Samsung Focus off USB all the time, but only when using the powered port. 11/30/2010 10:56 PM | Chris G. Williams

Chris - Good point about ensuring its a powered USB port. I switched to a different port and my phone is charging, but its still seems very slow compared to a wall-plug (which I guess is to be expected).

You'd think, if the USB port doesn't have enough power to recharge the battery that the phone wouldn't show that its charging (with the plug icon)...that's what might be confusing people. 12/1/2010 11:15 AM | D'Arcy from Winnipeg

I had the same experience and when I used the diagnostic tool to see what my battery level was, it turns out it wasn't charging at all. After 2 hours i had lost 5% of my battery charge. Dumb Samsung. 2/18/2011 1:54 PM | hugosays

I noticed my phone was still 'charging' after being connected for 6+ hours and decided to look online.. which lead me to this post.
looks like I'm not the only one with this awesome slow-charge feature. here's to great travels ahead. 3/23/2011 5:32 PM | Alex Talarico

Thanks for the tips. I am not at home and don't have my wall charger with me, but at least I can get my phone working again since I found that 1 of my 3 laptop USB ports will charge it. 4/8/2011 7:40 AM | Rob Kraft

You don't add apostrophes to plurals. Do's is not correct, it's Dos. 7/18/2011 9:25 AM | Grammar Man

Guys, it's not about the voltage, it's the amperage. .5 amps is all a typical USB port will put out... most wall chargers put out more, thus, it takes less time to charge the phone. 2/3/2012 10:15 AM | jb

It depends on the type of USB. USB 1 will charge really slowly. Two will charger faster. Three, if the device is three capable will charge the fastest. 12/8/2012 3:05 PM | IDS
