My user groups lessons learned and recommendations (dup from my MSDN blog)
My local .NET user group (CRINETA) has had a bumpy road recently after loosing several key contributers. I stepped down as leader of the group around 10 months ago. Since then, I've tried to stay involved the group through email, but I'm typically unavailable to attend meetings. The information below are some of the lessons learned during my 3 years running the user group. I hope that other user group leaders find this information helpful. Associations There are many International and National organizations ......

So what is a Great Programmer these days?
I warn you this path takes up about 4 hours of your time if you dare follow. So I know I'm bringing up some old posts, but I recently came across them is my night of blog reading. I recently read Bram Cohen's post about Avalanche. This lead me to watching his stanford talk. Which took me to some other blog that linked me to Robert Scoble's Zef says Microsoft can't hire great programmers. Next I read Zef Hamel's post on “Why Microsoft Can't Hire Great Programmers”. Of course now I had to listen to ......

Joining the blue shirts
Over the last two years I have worked for 5 different companies (including my own business) and assisted multiple clients with .NET throughout NE Iowa. This Monday I accepted an offer of employment from Microsoft!!! In two weeks I will be a Consultant for the US-MCS Central COE Division. This position will allow me to do the same work I have done of the last 4 years, just on a bit larger scale. I could potentially support anywhere between the Gulf of Mexico and Canada. Being that I am located in ......

David Anderson with save us all
I discovered this great video on channel 9 about “Writing Agile Software”. David Anderson writes the Agile Management blog that's been getting quite popular (and wrote a book on the same topic). He's been working with teams inside Microsoft increase developer productivity. If you watch the video you will understand where I came up with the title of this posting. I for one, have had more than my share of burnouts due to break downs in the project life cycle. I realize that some developers ......

HDC 2005 is over. Bring on 2006
After much planning and preparation, I can finally say that the HDC 2005 is over. This year's conference was another huge success. It was held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Cedar Rapids, IA and hosted 309 developers with a waiting list of 105 people. We had many speakers from our region as well as some nationally known speakers such as Rocky Lhotka, Rob Howard, Andrew Troelsen, and more. I have recieved great feedback from everyone involved in the conference and am looking forward to starting to plan ......

More Event Planning
The INETA/Microsoft Community Launch and Heartland Developer Conference 2005 planning are coming to a close. I have recently been tasked to start planning a way to get the INETA User Group Leader Summit so reach a larger audience. The INETA CA team has started planning a regional event called the “Community Leadership Summit”. I had initially hoped that the planning for the CLS would start in November to allow me time to focus on the HDC, which is next week! Unfortunately, we need to ......
