Analyzing CES 2012
I just got back from the Consumer Electronics Show 2012 (CES) which was held in Las Vegas. This is a good show for me and the company that I work for as it shows us some of the possible future trends of digital media consumption. Things presented at CES may just come and go and be quickly forgotten, but at the same time, there are definite themes on the conference that companies need to pay attention to. 3D is so yesterday! This was actually the second CES that I have been to and both were focused ......

REVIEW: Zune 2.0 - the best player on the market!
I got one of the first Zune players when it came out. There were things that I liked/disliked about it. The worse thing about it was the software that it came with. It was clunky and not to practical so I really didn't end up using it that often. Though, with that said, Microsoft recently released the new 2.0 version of the Zune software which was basically a complete new software package. With the new software and the changes to the firmware that was made to the Zune player along with the client ......

ReSharper on Visual Studio 2008
If I were to pick one tool to add to Visual Studio for my day-to-day coding, it would be ReSharper by JetBrains. I have been using the tool since version 2.0 and it is currently in version 3.0. It provides a ton of tips/corrections/advice as you type code. It provides better tooltips, better Intellisense, and extremely better refactoring than what you get out of the box with the default Visual Studio. For those of us out there that grab hold of the latest betas as soon as possible, you might be wondering ......

Microsoft Surface and the Future of Home Computing?
The big news of the day is that Microsoft's Steve Ballmer introduced Microsoft Surface. A table computer that allows the end user to interact with the computer through their fingertips! No keyboard - no mouse. First thing you should do is take a look at the movies Microsoft made about this: http://www.microsoft.com/su... The ability to drag and drop items around with your fingers. The ability to place a digital camera on the table surface and automatically pull the images / send them / edit them ......

Office 2007 to the Rescue!
I installed Office 2007 on my laptop. This was for me an upgrade from Office 2003 and the upgrade went beautifully. It launches by asking you for the Office key right at the beginning and you can copy and paste the entire key in at once as it is a single textbox (which is a nice feature). You can also provide the key later and just install Office directly without this key. From there, you are provided two buttons - Upgrade and Custom. For kicks, I pressed the Custom tab to see what it was installing ......

Google has recently purchased Urchin Web Analytics and now is offering free web analytics for your website. Visit http://www.google.com/analytics/ for more information. Seems quite powerful for non-enterprise cases.

"Would you like to play a game?"
Though I have no need for any telephony capabilities, I liked listening to all the computer created voices on this site as it reminded me of one of my favorite movies from the 80's! http://www.tmaa.com/tts/com... When are they going to remake this great movie ......

Random Notes 19Jan05
Mr. Kent Sharkey informs everyone who may be interested in working with the latest ASP.NET 2.0 bits that the November 2004 CTP is better than the December 2004 CTP package. Where do you get these Community Technology Previews btw? From logging onto your MSDN subscription, that's how! Bill Gates is trying to arrange a meeting with the President of Brazil in order to convince him about the evils of open source and why they should stick it out with Microsoft. Interesting read here on this topic. I would ......

BETA: Microsoft's Anti-Spyware Software Released as Beta 1
http://www.microsoft.com/do... Here it is! And I have to say that it is running very well on my WinXP machine here. Interesting though, when you go to download the .exe, it will only allow for you to download it if you allow Microsoft to 'validate' if your OS is genuine or not. Also interesting that the updater .exe for the program is still called GIANTAntiSpywareUpdater.exe. I guess since it is a beta product, that ......

Microsoft Launches Windows XP Media Center 2005
Some of us got to see some of the outstanding demos of this product at the latest MVP summit - but now the Windows XP Media Center 2005 has launched: Microsoft Launches New Media Center PC One of the first channels available is the new Reuters channel giving you instant access to news and video footage. We have it running here in the office and it was a great way to interact with the news ..... now to build my own media center pc at home .... hmmmm ......

Chip Implants
No matter how easy life would get for me for doing this .... I would never get a chip implant. Here is a story from the BBC about their Science producer getting an implant in Barcelona so that he can have his drinks automatically debited to his account while “clubbing“ through the implant in his arm. Ok ... that's just plain disturbing to me.

Pre-orders now being taken for Microsoft's Portable Media Centers
Something I saw at the MVP Summit this year and never mentioned cause I still thought it was top top secret and I would have people chasing me down if I even whispered ANYTHING to my mother about this at all is now available for pre-order from Amazon. The Microsoft Portable Media Center is an MP3/Video/Photo player that is out there to compete with Apple's IPOD. This, from the demo I saw of it in the MVP Summit, is a pretty cool device. There seem to be two models available - the Samsung Yepp YH-999 ......

The Reuters Putt-Putt Car
I just got back from another trip to Europe for Reuters. I visited a number of customers in various countries. One country was Switzerland. Here our Reuters employees usually take the train into work and don't have a car when they are in downtown Zürich. Because of this, Reuters has purchased a number of cars for employees to use as they go visit customers. The car of choice? - the Smart car. This little car has two seats only and a space for a backpack in the back. It felt like I was riding ......

Internet service on the airplane getting closer and closer
Good to hear that another airline signed on for Internet access on the airplanes for the passengers as reported here. Too bad that American Airlines isn't on board with this yet. I would definitely pay the 29 dollars for Internet on a long flight to London. What an outstanding thing that would be. Maybe I could then bring my Linksys router and then start broadcasting it to the other passengers and go around and collect dues or something. ;) ......

XBOX Watch: New XBOX late next year
Seems there are some more words coming out about XBOX 2.0. Details include: XBOX 2 might not include a hard drive, but instead depend on flash memory. They are not sure that XBOX 1 games will work on XBOX 2 IBM will be the chip supplier (already knew that) Scary ... I have been making a huge investment in XBOX 1 games and controls and wouldn't want to really upgrade. I doubt game vendors will have XBOX 1 and XBOX 2 versions of their new games that come out after the release of XBOX 2. Yikes, I think, ......

DREAM Software Coding Job!
Here is a screen shot of a program that NASA engineers use to drive the rover that is on Mars! (Click on it to get a bigger version) The quote off of the NASA site says: This image shows a screenshot from the software used by engineers to roll the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity off its lander and onto martian soil. Engineers received confirmation that Opportunity's six wheels had touched ground at 3:01 a.m. PST, January 31, 2004, on the seventh martian day, or sol, of the mission. The software ......

Christmas is coming .... is it a present for the boy or me? hehe
Well, Christmas is coming and I need to get shopping (I am horrible with this). My boy, Henri, is 3 this year - so it is a fun Christmas. I am going out to get him a slot-car racing set (don't tell my wife!). I used to get one of these every year when I was a kid - now it is his turn. BUT, I am sooo excited about getting this slot-car set as well that I think I can almost put my name on the package next to his. Thanks Santa ......

Don't Buy That Flat Panel TV for Christmas!
Every time I go into Best Buy, all I see are these flat panel TVs. There are so many of them, it seemed to me that every household had one but mine. This article about flat panel TVs made me happy though when it said that these TVs only account for 3% of all TV sales and more importantly - that you should wait till next year to buy your flat panel TV as prices will drop another 30%! That means I should get mine by 2006 - about the same time as Longhorn! ;) Unless Santa is reading my blog! Hey Santa ......
