To connect to TFS 2010 using VS2008, you need to install the below components in mentioned order. The Installation order is really important to make it work.

- Install Visual Studio 2008
- Install Team Explorer 2008
- Install Visual Studio 2008 SP1 (This will upgrade both VS2008 and Team Explorer 2008 to SP1)
- Install VSTS 2008 Forward Compatibility Update

As TFS2010 introduces the notion of Team Project Collections. After the installation is completed successfully, you should provide the entire URL to connect TFS2010 server.

You can express the connection string as follows:

http://<serverName>:<port>/<vdir>/<collectionName> (e.g. http://TfsServer:8080/Tfs/ProjectCollectionName)

The <vdir> is an optional path for the TFS web sites specified by the administrator during setup. By default it is “tfs”.

Thank you for this posting. It is just what I need although I cannot get it to work. I have downloaded and installed as you suggest.
I want to put my SSRS reports in BIDS into TFS.
So in BIDS (which uses VS 2008), I click on Tools -> Connect to TFS -> servers -> Add.
In the input box I enter the url but I get an error message:
"TFS31002: Unable to connect to this Team Foundation Server: [name]. Team Foundation Server Url: [url]

Possible reasons for failure include:

- The Team Foundation Server name, port number or protocol is incorrect.

- The Team Foundation Server is offline.

- Password is expired or incorrect."

If you have trouble with accessing TFS, make sure you connect in exactly the following manner:
http://<serverName>:<port>/<vdir>/<collectionName> (e.g. http://TfsServer:8080/Tfs/ProjectCollectionName)

The syntax from VS.NET 2010 is not working.

I struggled for a while with it, finally got it going using regedit (thank you http://www.jmedved.com/2009/11/visual-studio-2008-and-team-foundation-server-2010/ ) but then I find I need VS2010 to create a new project! I don't want to upgrade. Any suggestions? http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/tfsgeneral/thread/a9ba7fed-03a3-4273-99a4-5385de8e5aeb
I'm doing a Proof of concept installation on my Windows 7 machine, installing both the server and the team explorer on one machine.
Thanks!

Add/Remove TFS Server dialog does not support the 2010 TFS Server URL.
http://tfs.edatatrace.com:8080/tfs/defaultcollection
Can you store this directly and where?
