These are my notes on creating a windows service using Visual Studio.  Another post will show the code; this just deals with the Visual Studio IDE

Add new project -> Windows -> Windows Service

Rename service source name

Create the installer

  1. View service in designer mode
  2. Right-click in designer to display menu; choose Add Installer

Add Service Process Installer

  1. Define parent as Installer
  2. Set account as LocalSystem

Add Service Installer

  1. Set display name
  2. Set serviceName; this is what appears in the services control panel

To set service name for logging purposes

  1. Right-click service name; choose designer
  2. Click in designer; scroll down to ServiceName and set it to match what you define the service name in the Add Service Installer step
