Geeks With Blogs

Welcome to my blog.
Here's what we've got on the menu today:

Lorin Thwaits A geek says what? Errors Stuff that should be in the Knowledge Base, but isn't yet. So it's here.
The type or namespace name 'Pkcs' does not exist in the namespace 'System.Security.Cryptography'
I had an error that was been driving me up the wall, CS0234: The type or namespace name 'Pkcs' does not exist in the namespace 'System.Security.Cryptograp... This always happened while developing a web application in Visual Studio 2005 and wanting to use code that deals with certificates. During development Intellisense would find the System.Security.Cryptograph... namespace just fine. But it couldn't be found at runtime. I had registered the System.Security assembly, and the project always built ......

Well, was Silverlight installed or wasn't it?

Oh, I guess it was.  But along the way you have to deal with a misleading error message:

So it ends up it was really installed, and thinks it needs a restart.  But it doesn't.  It works fine at that point.  Just refresh the page where you tried to use Silverlight and up it comes.

Whoa, GWB doesn't allow "cmd . exe" anywhere in a post!

If you take out the spaces then it won't post: cmd . exe

When you try to post it waits for about 20 seconds, and then comes up with no response.  Spooky because meanwhile the server is probably in limbo chasing its tail out there somewhere.

How to repair a driver problem on Vista when it won't even boot
Szymon Kobalczyk was having fun with the 64-bit version of Vista. That is until he tried to install a game called Price of Persia: the two thrones. The machine won't even boot now! But most likely all is not lost. If you find yourself in this kind of pickle then getting back to a restore point using System Restore is a great thing to try. Here's two ways to do that: First plan of attack is to try to boot to Safe Mode, which is done from the boot menu that comes up by pressing F8 right after the POST ......

GoDaddy has fairly good service, but don't trust their dedicated IPs!
Over the past couple of years I've had a few websites set up on GoDaddy. Overall it's been a pretty good experience. But there is one word of warning that I should give about their dedicated services. About a month ago they changed what I thought was my static IP address to something completely different! So a bunch of names I had pointed to that IP completely broke. And all this time, for 23 months, I was paying $3 a month for this IP. If I did an nslookup on their name that was tied with this so-called ......

Fixing the "Microsoft Bus Driver" error message when installing a RealTek sound card
In my last post I talked about a great little UMPC I bought while on vacation in Japan, Sony's VGN-UX50. Once back in the states and having caught up with work again I installed XP Pro English with SP2 in a new folder, keeping the ability to dual boot back to Japanese XP Home. I was pleasantly surprised to find most of the drivers available right there on the hard drive. But when installing the driver for the sound card, I got the message “Microsoft Bus Driver should be loaded in your system before ......

What to do when SQL error 605 or 823 strikes
Below is a question that was posted to AZGroups earlier this afternoon. I removed the database and table names because I'm downright anal about security :) Having table problems, and I am just stumped.... Our dev website started coming back with the following error when a user logs in: Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server error '80004005'Warning: Fatal error 605 occurred .... Microsoft's MSDN gives: ERROR_BAD_COMPRESSION_BUFFER 605The specified buffer contains ill-formed data.( ......

How a lousy keyboard can masquerade as a virus (Outlook constantly opens)
The scenario goes something like this: One day while using your XP system suddenly every time you start typing Outlook opens! Every few keystrokes it opens and gains focus, again and again. “What in the world is going on here,” you think. “Perhaps a virus!” So you fight with the errant machine and eventually start a virus scan, coming up with nothing unusual. Checking for spyware or other malicious programs also comes up empty. But the obvious and annoying problem persists. ......

ASP.NET Compiler Error CS0006
Do you have arcane CS0006 errors haunting you, either in 1.1 or 2.0? Something like this: Compiler Error Message: CS0006: Metadata file 'C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\F... ASP.NET Files\someProject\27bee1ac\... could not be foundSource Error: [No relevant source lines] Additional symptoms: when you first build the app it works fine, but then when rebuilding it always comes up with this error. Well, I know of three major reasons for this to occur: You've ......
