Backing up SQL Server to Windows Azure Store using Credentials

Goal: How to backup my SQL Server database to a Windows Azure Store, which is just a folder on your Azure account. Of course you need a Windows Azure account to do this with a Store subscription. In your store subscription you will have a Manage Keys option which will show you your keys needed to connect to your Windows Azure account's Store.

You also will need to create a CREDENTIALS file in SQL Server Management Studio that contains your credentials info to use when SQL Manager tries to connect to your Azure account. You do not specify the credentials in your backup statement but define them in the credentials file. To create a credentials file, simply go to the Security option in your SQL Server Management Studio Object Explorer tree and right-click on Credentials. Simply enter the Identify from your Windows Azure Store and the Azure key as the password. That's it! In my example I called the Credentials file "mydatabaseCredentialsFile".

Now to backup run the following command. Note this does not work in BI or Express editions of SQL Server.

  TO URL = ''
  WITH CREDENTIAL = 'mydatabasesCredentialsFile';
