T-SQL: Target server product version and edition

To find out what the target server product version and edition is:

SELECT SERVERPROPERTY('ProductVersion');
SELECT SERVERPROPERTY('Edition');

This may seem trivial, but a mistake some folks make is that just because you are for example running SQL Server 2012 Enterprise does not mean the  target server you are connecting to is. For example, you are wondering why the "SQL Server Agent" does not appear on the tree in your Object Explorer in SQL Server Management studio. Well it could be that your target server is an Express edition. You are trying to run a backup to a URL and it says that the URL is invalid, well it may be that your target server is a BI edition or Express. So seemingly obvious factors can be hard to spot sometimes.
