This post is common knowledge to all SharePoint professionals out there, but for newbie's it can save hours of hair pulling (as I’ve got to learn from a bunch of people I’ve helped out) ;)

Scenario: There is a distribution list you can see and use in outlook, but when you search for the same list in SharePoint it doesn’t show up in the people picker. What gives?

Chances are that the distribution list is not security enabled. This would need to be done by your domain administrator. He would need to change the ‘Group Type’ of the list from ‘distribution’ to ‘security’. Once this is done your SharePoint administrator would need to run a profile import so SharePoint can pick up the change immediately (alternatively you can let SharePoint automatically pick it up during its scheduled AD crawl).

There has to be a way you can enable the People Picker to get distribution groups. What about the SelectionSet property? In my organization, they are loathe to switch the distribution groups to security groups.

Is there any way to get SharePoint to set them as security instead of distribution? Also, what stops the correct "@.....doc1.wa.lcl" from carrying over to AD? It gets created with @wa.gov instead.

I have a customer who has linked sharepoint to outlook, however when she adds an avent to outlook it does not show up in SharePoint. The connection works (as event added to sharepoint show up in her outlook) but not the opposite way round. I've attempted removing her as a user and reconnecting but that hasnt function. Any tips?

Thank you ... useful information. For me, time is important. Plus all the things that it saves

Is there a way to point the People/Group Picker to an Outlook address book rather than a SharePoint address book?

I have some users set up in Outlook (and this information is updated regularly), who are not in SharePoint. Since Outlook is the more reliable source, I would like the People/Group Picker to populate from Outlook rather than SharePoint.

Is this possible?
